Upcoming Archives Week in Monmouth County

Contributed by Gary Saretzky

The Monmouth County Archives has planned an Archives Week celebration, culminating with Archives and History Day on October 12, 2013, similar to the one held for the seventeenth time last year, when about 350 people attended all or part of the event.  The program will be held at the Monmouth County Library Headquarters in Manalapan, New Jersey, and will feature keynote speaker, Marc Mappen, Professor of History, Rutgers University, New Brunswick, who will address a theme related to his 2013 book, Prohibition Gangsters: The Rise and Fall of a Bad Generation.  A related exhibit on the Prohibition era in New Jersey will be on view during the month of October in the Library.  Archives Week will also feature four other public programs on October 7 and 9: lecture on early African American land ownership in Monmouth County; lecture on photographer Margaret Bourke-White during Prohibition; a panel of authors who have written books on the Prohibition era in New Jersey; and a panel on disaster recovery with a focus on Hurricane Sandy.  The Archives and History Day program will be posted at http://co.monmouth.nj.us/page.aspx?ID=1717
