2018 Year End Report from the Chair

Dear Delaware Valley Archivists,
With a new year almost upon us, I wanted to take this opportunity to reflect back on what amounted to a busy and exciting 2018. With 245 members, the Delaware Valley Archivists Group is just one member shy of matching our highest membership numbers ever. We sincerely appreciate the continued support from all of our members, which allows DVAG to continue to offer the programs and services that we do. For 2018, we inaugurated several new initiatives, in particular, the awarding of our first annual Diversity and Inclusion Recognition Award, which was presented to the John J. Wilcox, Jr. Archives at the William Way LGBT Community Center. DVAG also agreed to become the financial sponsor for Archives for Black Lives in Philly (A4BLiP) and was a co-sponsor of MARAC’s fall conference held at Wilmington in October.
For 2018, we hosted nine meetings and events, covering a wide range of topics and activities. We met at the Fairmount Park Archives for a discussion of copyright and rights statements, enjoyed a presentation on 19th century photographs at the Academy of Natural Sciences, and convened a panel discussion on women’s archives at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. In addition, we had tours of the archives at Morris Arboretum, Shane Confectionery, and Independence National Historical Park. We also hosted a debrief of SAA’s 2018 annual meeting and held our third annual holiday potluck at the German Society Of Pennsylvania.
DVAG continues to award SAA Annual Meeting Travel Grants and offering our Resume and Practice Interview Bureau service, as well as being the ongoing sponsor of the hugely successful Archives Month Philly for six years straight. We recently concluded our officer elections and are welcoming several new members to the Planning Committee (PC) for 2019: Sara Borden as Membership Coordinator, Holly Mengel as Communications Manager, and Caroline Hayden as Vice-Chair/Chair-Elect. The PC also re-appointed Chrissie Perella for another term as At-Large Member. We also have several PC members who are completing their terms of office who deserve a hearty thank you for their work and generosity over the past years: Shaun Kirkpatrick (Membership Coordinator, 2017-2018) and Jasmine Clark (Communications Manager, 2017-2018). An extra special thank you goes out to Hillary Kativa, who served as Secretary (2014-2015), Vice Chair and Chair (2016-2017) and Past Chair (2018).
In closing, I hope you enjoyed some of the benefits of being a DVAG member in 2018 and are excited for new opportunities to do so in 2019. It’s been a pleasure to serve as your Chair this past year and I am grateful for having worked with all of the talented and dedicated members that comprise the DVAG Planning Committee. As we toast the arrival of 2019, I look forward to seeing the role taken over by our incoming Chair, Kelsey Duinkerken.
Best wishes to you all for a Happy New Year. As always, if you have ideas for DVAG events or initiatives, please don’t hesitate to email chairDVAG@gmail.com.
